Donald Trump granted pardons to rappers Lil Wayne and Kodak Black on Tuesday night as part of a last-minute frenzy that saw Trump grant clemency to many political allies on his last full day in office.
Wayne, real name Dwayne Carter, pleaded guilty to a federal weapons charge last year and received a full pardon. Kodak Black, real name Bill Kapri, received a commutation after being charged in 2019 with falsifying information on federal firearms purchase forms.
Bradford Cohen, lawyer for the two rappers, confirmed in a Rolling stone report that both were granted clemency.
“President Trump and his administration have been tireless advocates on behalf of the African American community,” Cohen said. Rolling stone, add, “These graces are a perfect example of this administration which follows through on its reforms and its commitments.”
Last November, Carter was charged with one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon. The charge arose out of an incident that occurred on December 23, 2019 in Miami-Dade County, Florida.
In December, Carter pleaded guilty to the federal charge and his sentencing hearing was scheduled to take place on January 28. lighter sentence which may not include a prison sentence.
Carter and Kodak were among the 140 or so people who obtained Trump’s forgiveness.
