Trump urges May to "stay" to finalize a "very very important" UK-UK trade deal – live news | Policy

Well, at least one person is happy Donald TrumpState visit to the United Kingdom. That's what the US president said last night after visiting Buckingham Palace for a luncheon with the Queen.

His reference to "extraordinary crowds" will surprise anyone in London or watch the news yesterday and the White House has not tweeted photos of these huge crowds of Trump fans – probably for the obvious reason that they do not exist not. (Sometimes, even for relatively short journeys, Trump flew through the capital by helicopter – like a seasoned politician going to a war zone – and even when he was driven by car, the police had kept the sidewalks clear of fear, his convoy could receive milkshake treatment, or worse.) Yet why leave the facts, etc.? etc. You can see on the pictures tweeted by the White House why Trump, who aspires to be treated like a monarch, was so grateful to get a warm welcome from a real one.

Today we receive the political side of the state visit, Trump going to Downing Street for talks with Theresa May and a press conference. Given that May will be in office in a few weeks, it's hard to understand what's going on, and Trump may have been better advised to spend time talking to Boris Johnson, the big favorite to replace her. (It is still unclear whether Trump will meet Johnson during the downtime scheduled in his schedule.) But even if the talks are sloppy, the press conference will have little chance of being boring.

And, while Trump will meet in May, thousands of people should be nearby in London to protest against him. Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the Labor Party, also chose to boycott the state dinner last night. This morning Emily Thornberry, the foreign minister in the shadow, told the program today why Corbyn, who should deal with Trump as prime minister if early general elections lead to a Labor government, takes this position. She says:

A state visit is an honor and we do not think this president deserves an honor. The truth is that he tried to close the borders with Muslim-majority countries, he caged small Mexican children, he caught women and boasted of it. He is a badual predator, he is racist and it is fair to say that we have to think about when is our country so scared?

Thornberry also explained why Corbyn had refused to attend a state dinner for Trump while attending a dinner of the President of China, a country with a record of human rights. a man much worse than that of the United States. She says:

When you have a close friend and he is wrong, you are more likely to be emphatic with them and clearer with them than the one who has not been so close and with whom you are trying to build a relationship.

She said that Trump should be regarded as "the way you deal with a bully" because "if you bow down to them, you are just beaten stronger".

9am: Andrea Leadsom, Leader of the House of Commons and Conservative Leader, holds a conference call on the AML.

9:20: President Trump must arrive at Buckingham Palace. He will then visit St James's Palace for a meeting with business leaders.

9:30: Penny Mordaunt, Secretary of Defense, addresses the RUSI think tank.

11h: Jeremy Corbyn is among those who spoke at the anti-Trump protest that started in Trafalgar Square. Anti-Trump demonstrations are also taking place in other cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee. Between 10:00 am and noon, the Trump airship will fly over Parliament Square.

11:20: Trump must arrive at Downing Street for talks with Theresa May and other ministers. Then there will be a working lunch.

1:45 p.m.: Trump and May hold a press conference.

19h: Conservative party candidates Sajid Javid, Boris Johnson, Kit Malthouse and Andrea Leadsom are due to speak at a private roundup in the House of Commons hosted by the group of conservative One Nation MPs.

Evening: Trump is hosting a dinner for the month of May and other British dignitaries at Winfield House, the residence of the US ambbadador. The Prince of Wales will represent the Queen.

And at some point today, the Executive of the 1922 Conservative Committee of Backbenchers will meet to discuss amending the rules to reduce the number of candidates running for the party leadership Conservative.
