US Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who has applied some of President Donald Trump's controversial border policies, has resigned.

Customs and Border Commissioner Kevin McAleenan will replace her temporarily, Trump said.

Ms. Nielsen was responsible for the border wall project with Mexico and the separation of migrant families.

His resignation took place after the president had indicated that he wanted to follow a more severe "immigration" policy.

He often accused Ms. Nielsen of not being tough enough.

In recent months, illegal crossings from Central America have jumped and Mr Trump has threatened to close the Mexican border.

He has since backtracked and promised to give Mexico a year to prevent drugs and migrants from entering the United States.

The New York Times announced that Nielsen met with Trump on Sunday to plan a "way forward" for the border situation.

Instead, she was pressured to resign from her job, according to US media, citing unnamed sources.

She gave no reason for leaving in her letter of resignation, although she said it was "the right time for me to withdraw" and stated that the United States "are safer today than when I joined the Administration".
