TUC calls for calm amid unrest over base salary increase for 2021 and 2022

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has urged unions unhappy with the base wage increases for public sector workers for 2021 and 2022 to show restraint.

At a union organization press conference on July 26, 2021, General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress, Dr Yaw Baah, said that the basic salary increase of 4% for 2021 and 7% for 2022 could have been worse.

“The result was not what we expected, but it could have been worse, given the economic challenges and the government’s stance towards wage increases, especially in 2021,” Dr Baah said. .

The union’s demand came as three teachers’ unions expressed dissatisfaction with the announced base salary increase.

Trade unions ; The Ghana National Teachers Association (GNAT), the National Association of Graduated Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Concerned Teachers Coalition (CCT) have requested a review.

GNAT in particular said its members were seething with anger.

But Dr Baah said besides the challenge of the coronavirus pandemic, the TUC feared further increases could lead to layoffs in the civil service.

“We had to avoid layoffs, by all means, because of the negative social and economic effects of the massive layoffs we witnessed in the 1990s, as part of the structural adjustment program,” he explained. .

The TUC, which negotiated with the government as part of the trade union movement, was able to guarantee that in the next two years the government will not declare any public sector workers dismissed.

They also agreed that the government will not freeze public service employment, that all workers must be vaccinated against Covid-19 within the next two years, and that the government will pay social security contributions regularly.

Moving forward, in accordance with agreements with the government, Dr Baah said unions must ensure that “there will be no layoffs, a million jobs will be created over the next three years, Evenly distributed across the 16 regions, all workers will be vaccinated and workers’ pension contributions will be paid on time, without delay.

The basic pay structure on the single column pay structure is determined by the Civil Service Joint Standing Bargaining Committee 3 which is made up of government representatives from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Department of Employment and Labor Relations and the Ministry of Finance.
