The Congress of Trade Unions of Ghana (TUC) called on the government to review the "colonial" labor laws governing employment in the country.
TUC Secretary-General Yaw Baah made the appeal at the May Day Celebration on the theme of Black Star Square in Accra; "Sustainable pension for all".
Dr. Baah said the labor laws in the country were outdated and could not solve the problems facing the contemporary worker.
"There is a need to revisit the employment laws because current labor laws do not adequately protect Ghanaian workers, particularly in terms of job security, income security, personal safety and security. security, "he said.
He added that the union had made its case known to the National Tripartite Commission for a review of labor legislation, in particular the National Labor Law to protect the interests of workers in Ghana.
He appealed to the government for it to help the public bodies needed to facilitate a speedy review process.
"We are confident that the government will provide the necessary support to the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations, the Department of Justice and Attorneys General and Parliament to facilitate the review process so that we have access to legislation. that actually protect workers from the laws in force. colonial labor practices in some workplaces. "
Dr. Baah noted, however, that the current workers' pension scheme had many shortcomings, which should be corrected.
He observed that out of a total of 13 million people working in the country, more than 11 million people did not have access to a pension under the Social Security and National Insurance (SSNIT) ).
He said that the 300 retirement pensions for about one quarter of the 200,000 retirees of the SSNIT scheme were terribly inadequate.
"This is not acceptable in a rich, proud, middle-income country like Ghana. Something is really wrong with our economic or social policy. Mr President, we would like to appeal to you to correct this flaw in our social policy. We are waiting for comprehensive plans on a road map for universal pension coverage in Ghana in the 2020 budget. "
The Ghana TUC is the main umbrella organization for trade union activities in the country. It is composed of 18 affiliations.
