The Tunisian media mogul and presidential candidate, Nabil Karoui, has been charged with money laundering, his badets have been frozen and banned from traveling, a judicial source said Monday.

Karoui and his brother, Ghazi Karoui, have been under investigation since 2017 after I-Watch, an anti-corruption watchdog, filed a case accusing it of tax evasion, said Sofiene Sliti, spokesman for the judicial department in charge of financial affairs.

"After an investigation into the complaint lodged by I-Watch and after summoning and hearing the two men (…), the judge decided 10 days ago to lay charges of money laundering against Nabil Karoui and Ghazi Karoui, "he told AFP.

The judge also decided to freeze their badets and forbid them to travel abroad.

In 2002, the brothers launched Karoui & Karoui, an international advertising and media company.

Nabil Karoui was an active supporter of the election of President Beji Caid Essebsi in 2014, but has become a fierce opponent of Prime Minister Youssef Chahed.

In May, Karoui, who also founded a large private television channel, Nessma, announced that he would run in the presidential elections next November to succeed Essebsi.

But the amendments to the electoral law adopted the following month would rule out his candidacy.
