Turkey defeated reigning world champion France 2-0 on Saturday in the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers to retain their overall lead in Group H, winning their third consecutive victory.

France, world champion, had its first setback in the playoffs with the Turkish victory.

France watched Kaan Ayhan open the scoring for Turkey after 30 minutes and Cengiz Ünder doubled the lead in the 40th minute for Şenol Güneş, who had succeeded the Turkish head coach in February.

The Turkish national team made their first win against France after losing four games against Group H with nine out of three points, scoring the total of eight unanswered goals, while France won with six.

Iceland also scored six points in three Group H matches with a 1-0 home victory against Albania (three points) thanks to Johann Berg Gudmundsson's goal in the 22nd minute.

Turkey, in the first match, beat Albania 2-0, then Moldova 4-0.

The coach of France, Didier Deschamps, was scathing on the performance of his team.

"When you play like that at the collective level, there is nothing positive to be learned from the game," he told TF1. "We did not play as we should have done against a team that played as she likes."

After retiring from behind, Benjamin Pavard gave a free kick to the left in the 30th minute. Midfielder Cengiz Ünder sent the ball to the far post, where defender Kaan Ayhan pushed off goalkeeper Hugo Lloris by far.

Ünder, 21, who has already attracted attention on several occasions with Roma in the Italian Serie A, gave the advantage to Turkey 10 minutes later with a nice finish.

France was at fault, however, while center-center Samuel Umtiti and Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba lost the ball clumsily and quickly.

Central midfielder Dorukhan Toköz relieved and attacked the panicked defense retreating. He gave a pbad to Ünder to get into the right side of the penalty area and Ünder confidently sent a low shot to the bottom left corner.

"We were not present (and) that is the highest level, whether you are world champions or not," Deschamps said. "When you do not show good intentions, you can not hope for anything."
