Didier Deschamps admitted that France's 2-0 defeat by Turkey in qualifying at Euro 2020 was a slap to its World Cup winners.

Kaan Ayhan and the impressive Cengiz Under scored the first half to give Turkey a first win against France and a three-point lead in Group H.

Deschamps, whose team has not even managed a perfect shot and should rebound Tuesday against Andorra, told TF1: "When the team performs such a performance, there is nothing positive to remember.

"We have not come and even if we are world champions, if we play like that, we have no hope.

"We took a good slap tonight. We have to badyze it, we have another match coming in three days.

"Nothing more to add besides saying good to Turkey and back to the basics."

Midfielder Moussa Sissoko told the TV channel L'Equipe: "There are no excuses, we know the areas we missed – everywhere.

"There are still a lot of matches. In the past, we made these mistakes and we always bounced back.

"We have a quality team, talent, we must do everything to avoid this kind of performance."

The coach of Turkey, Senol Gunes, said his team was in a "brilliant" evening, which has dominated the scoring opportunities despite the fact that France has more possession of the ball.

Gunes told Spor Arena: "This team is here to give hope and happiness.

"The players and the fans were great. We played with discipline and with one heart. "

Turkey will then face Iceland, tied with France, with six points in three matches.

Turkish Football Federation President Nihat Ozdemir, who only took the post on Monday, said he received a congratulatory phone call after the country's president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Ozdemir, quoted by Sabah Spor, said: "Mr. the President phoned me on the phone. He thanked me, congratulated our players and our coach Senol.

"We have nine points and we are the leader of the group. We have an important game against Iceland in front of us, hope we will come back with the win. "
