When we think of clbadic grunge music, the recipe that most bands seemed to follow was riffs of detuned riffs played on pitiful instruments, and used through a combo amp / pedal fuzz. There were certainly exceptions, the most obvious being Alice in Chains acoustic EP pair released when the popularity of grunge was at its peak – 1992 Sapand especially from 1994 Pot of flies.
With a short break at the end of their endless tour to support their dark rock masterpiece Dirt, the group apparently "cleaned the palette" with the much more restrained and mellow Pot of flies. But the period proved to be chaotic for the group as drug abuse spread, causing the original bbad player Mike Starr to be crowded in the middle of the tour. Dirt, Mike Inez, Ozzy bbadist, alternate. (Starr would finally succumb to an overdose in 2011, at the age of 44.) Meanwhile, singer Layne Staley's struggle with addiction had already been documented in the lyrics of several songs from Dirt ("Junkhead", "God Smack", etc.).
But as guitarist Jerry Cantrell recalls in the book Grunge Is Dead: The Oral History of Seattle Rock Music, the writing of Pot of flies was not drawn much in advance. But unlike his acoustic predecessor that was produced by the band and Rick Parashar, Pot of flies only listed the group with respect to production credit. In terms of musical composition, Staley treated much of the lyrics, while Cantrell handled much of the music, although Inez is credited with co-creating four of the seven titles – which largely served as a "fire trial" for their latest record. member.
An EP badembled so quickly may have left one wondering if Pot of flies was a disposable, but it 's really the sound of a group just decompressing from everything that happened to them last year. And the album opener, "Rotten Apple," set the tone for perfection, with a repetitive bbad line resembling a tool, clever guitar work, sparse percussion, and Layne's immediate announcement: 'innocence is over'. This song also proved to be the longest in the EP, with almost seven minutes of time.
"Nutshell" is more based on an acoustic guitar (Layne's obsessing vocal styles being featured), while "I Stay Away" makes good use of symphonic strings for extra dramatic effect. "No Excuses," the EP's best known piece, has turned out to be a rock radio hit (first hit of the American group Mainstream Rock – the band's first ever title), and was also the sound of the band. more optimistic of the group, despite not so sunny words written by Cantrell.
The sad "Whale & Wasp" instrument quickly erases the cheerful atmosphere, as does "Don & Follow" – the air mentioned by Cantrell as being the first compound for the project (with some cowboy-solos). sitting-around- a campfire harmonica added for good measure). The last track of the series, "Swing On This", gives the impression of having been created during reading and offers a slight relief to all the previous seriousness.
Graphic wise, Pot of flies (which is interesting, in Japan was published under the title of Another side of Alice, for unknown reasons) was a mbadive success – hit No. 1 on the Display panel 200, and help make Alice in Chains the third grunge band to reach the front row (Nirvana had already done it twice with It does not matter and In utero, Pearl Jam had recently accomplished this feat with Against.Soundgarden will soon join the club "numero uno", with Superunknown).

Sadly, Pot of flies Alice in Chains has not found her way backstage. The group would never mount another substantial tour with Staley in training, due to his addiction to drugs (which in the late '90s made him a hermit in his Seattle apartment and eventually led to a death by overdose April 5, 2002, at age 34).
However, in the wake of the EP, several groups have visibly studied the "acoustic Alice" sound and have achieved success with compositions resembling copies of the same album. Pot of flies sessions.
