Twitter responded with joy to the news that Downing Street was considering sending the Queen’s youngest son, Prince Edward, to live in Scotland in an attempt to calm nationalist sentiment.
Edward and his wife Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, currently live in Bagshot Park in Surrey, but according to the Daily Mail, Number 10 had discussed asking them to move north of the border to ‘save the union’.
It is reported that the couple could have lived at Holyrood Palace, the Queen’s official residence in Edinburgh, helping the Royal Family carry out more Scottish engagements.
Buckingham Palace said it was not aware of the proposal.
Prince Edward’s name was all the rage on Twitter Saturday morning as the idea spread.
Writer Rupert Myers said: “We have really lost Scotland if that is the kind of thing that is cooked up.”
Along with many laughing emojis, SNP MP Chris Law said, “I’m sure Prince Edward and Sophie were eager to receive their number 10 orders.
Comic Janet Godley said, “Yeah … that’s going to do it – seeing Prince Edward digging down the Lidl’s center aisle in Maryhill looking for a bag of screen wipes is going to get me wrapped up in. a Union Flag and vote Tory. “

Author Emma Kennedy added: “Imagine sending Prince Edward to live in a castle will persuade the Scots that they don’t want to leave the Union.
A lot of people have just asked, “Who is Prince Edward?”
SNP member James Proctor said: “I hate to tell them, but I met Prince Edward when I was a teenager and have always joined the SNP.
But researcher Phillippa Juliet Meek-Smith noted: “So the news of Prince Edward’s departure to Scotland, which I take with a pinch of salt because it comes from the Daily Mail, has been the subject of a reflection. Prince Edward will become the next Duke of Edinburgh, so the reasoning is there and not just a random idea.
It is understood that Edward and Sophie were given the titles Earl and Countess of Wessex, rather than Duchy titles, as Edward was to inherit the title of Duke of Edinburgh from his father, Prince Philip.
Titles are a gift from the Queen at the wedding of a royal. The Wessexes are known as the Earl and Countess of Forfar while in Scotland.

Prince Edward and Sophie married in 1999, but did not take formal royal duties as active family members until 2002.
Edward worked in television, but his production company was not a success. Sophie was in public relations and had her own business.
They have two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.
Although they have worked in the royal family for almost 20 years, they are not as well known as young royals like Prince William and Kate. They have become more visible during the pandemic, with the Queen having to remain protected due to her age for most of the past 11 months.
Sophie, who volunteers privately and maintains ties with her charities, has been dubbed the royal family’s ‘secret weapon’.
Much of Edward’s work revolves around the Duke of Edinburgh’s awards program which he took over when Prince Philip retired in 2017.
