The Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA) will soon demolish structures on the waterways to allow rainwater to flow freely into local drains.

Ms. Adwoa Amoako, Executive Director of Tema West Municipal, made the announcement Wednesday in a sessional address at the second regular meeting of the Assembly.

Ms. Amoako said that her outfit had structures that were marked to be demolished on waterways, green belts and wetlands as part of measures to prevent flooding in the region.

She added that a visit with other officials in the flood zones of the municipality had revealed that the drainage network connecting Sakumono to the sea was filled with piles of garbage, thus blocking the water supply. flow of water down the drain.

To meet the challenge, she stated that the Assembly was funding the dredging and desilting of drains and the disposal of garbage in communities 17, 18, 19 and 20 as well as in the villages of Klagon, Devtraco and Sakumono.

She added that the TWMA would buy and stock relief items for disaster victims, while strengthening its awareness-raising exercises to mitigate the effects of disasters in the region.

Answering questions about what the Assembly was doing about the perpetual flooding of the "underlying bridge" linking Klagon to Ashaiman, she said the situation was worrying as her team was aware of the danger that this posed for residents and commuters whenever it was raining.

Ms Amoako said that TWMA sent an estimate to the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) for its construction, adding that GHA officials also went to the site and worked on solving the problem.

With regard to sanitation, she said since the establishment of the badembly, her team had undertaken a number of activities to improve sanitation in the municipality , as well as to complement the government 's commitment to improve the sanitation situation in the country and make Accra the cleanest city in Africa by 2020.
