Two French millionaires pledge to rebuild Notre-Dame with 300 million euros

Hundreds of millions of euros have been pledged to help rebuild Notre Dame after a devastating fire that partially destroyed the French cathedral.

The fire, declared extinguished completely about 15 hours after its debut, ravaged the roof of the building, 850 years old, and caused the collapse of its spire.

The firefighters who worked all night managed to save the main stone structure of the monument, including its two towers.

The cause of the fire is not yet clear.

The Paris prosecutor's office said that an investigation was underway on the investigator, which could be linked to major renovations.

Meanwhile, reflections are on the reconstruction of the Catholic cathedral.

French President Emmanuel Macron promised to rebuild the historic building even though the fire was still burning, while two French businessmen were committed to pouring around 300 million euros between them Tuesday morning.

Reconstruction aid offers have also poured in from around the world, with European Council President Donald Tusk calling on EU Member States to come together.

What happened?

The fire began around 6:30 pm (4:30 pm GMT) and quickly reached the roof of the cathedral, destroying the wooden interior before spilling the spire.

There is growing fear that the famous towers of the cathedral will be destroyed.
But while many fires broke out in the towers, the French Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, said that they had been arrested successfully before they could spread.

In the early hours of Tuesday, the fire had been declared under control. Paris Fire Services said it was completely off at 10:00 am local time (8:00 am GMT).

Commander Jean-Claude Gallet told BFM that a firefighter had been slightly injured while facing the fire.
