Two Malian gendarmes were killed by the explosion of a mine in front of a military base and a soldier died during a tense ambush in the north of the country, the armed forces said on Monday.

Since French troops helped force jihadists in 2013, parts of northern Mali remain out of control of the security forces and violence has spread to other parts of the country.

The two gendarmes were killed on Sunday when an improvised explosive device exploded as they walked near the entrance to a military post in Sokolo, in the central region of Segou, announced on Twitter the Malian armed forces.

In the north, an army patrol escorting civilians was ambushed between Niafounke and Tonka, about 100 km south of Timbuktu, the army said.

One soldier was killed and another wounded during the exchange.

The attacks in Mali are mainly in the north. But since 2015, the violence has also hit the center and the south of the country.

In addition to militant attacks and militia violence, Mali also faces intercommunal and ethnic clashes.

Earlier this month, an attack on the village of Sobane Da in central Mali killed 35 people in a Dogon enclave in the diverse region of Mopti.

President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita called for calm after the attack sparked fears of a cycle of ethnic killings.

The bases of the Malian army are also often attacked. Eleven soldiers were killed in April by suspected jihadists who attacked a post at Guire in the center of the country. In March, an badault on the Dioura military camp killed nearly 30 soldiers.
