Two people who tried to bribe a national security agent with 40,000 GH ¢ and 2,500,000 FCFA after their loaded trucks exceeded axle weight on the Accra-Tema highway appeared in a circuit court in Accra.
The amount was intended to influence or induce the national security officer to ignore the excessive weight of the trucks without subjecting them to applicable laws.
Alhaji Karim Abubakar and Abdul Rauf Jabril, both transporters, have been charged with conspiracy and bribery to influence a public official.
Abubakar and Jabril have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The discharge judge, Susana Edufful, admitted the two defendants to pay a bond in the amount of GH ¢ 80,000 with two bonds each to be justified with real estate.
The court further ordered that the documents relating to land ownership be filed with the court registry pending the final decision of the case.
The court also ordered the prosecution, as well as the defendants and their lawyers, to file their disclosures with the court registry.
Defense attorneys for the accused have requested bail.
The prosecution led by Detective Inspector Frederick Sarpong did not oppose the granting of the bail, but urged the court to attach conditions to the bail in order to compel the defendants to appear before a full trial .
The case was adjourned until September 14.
Inspector Sarpong told the court that the plaintiff in this case was a national security agent in Accra and that the defendants were also plying the port of Tema via the Accra-Tema highway to Mali.
The prosecution said that following reports that some ECOWAS hauliers and truck drivers had colluded with Ghanaian officials in charge of axle-weighing points to reduce the state of compulsory levies payable, the prosecution said. According to the Prosecutor, on August 1, 2021, at around 7:30 p.m., the accused had their trucks driven to the axle weighing point along the Accra Tema highway.
The prosecution said that Abubakar and Jabril, whose trucks exceeded the authorized axle weight, conspired and bribed the plaintiff with 40,000 GH ¢ and 2.5 million CFA francs to ignore the excessive weight of the trucks. and not subject them to applicable laws.
The prosecutor said the plaintiff caused the arrest of the defendants and handed them over to the police.
During the investigations, the prosecution stated that Abubakar and Jabril stated that they had engaged the services of drivers to transport their goods from the port of Tema in Mali.
In their investigative warning statements, the prosecution said the defendants admitted to giving the complainant money.
