Two more confirmed measles cases in Vancouver – Coast Mountain News

Two more cases of measles have been confirmed in Vancouver, but one of them is unknown. Officials asked the public to check if they were in the Richmond, Squamish, Whistler and Vancouver areas in case they were exposed.

There are now 10 confirmed cases in Vancouver. Nine were linked to students, staff and families in three French-language schools. An eleventh case, contracted by a person who had traveled outside Canada and identified earlier this month, is not related to the current outbreak because it did not spread the disease.

"Because we have not yet identified the source of transmission of one of the new cases of measles, it is possible that we have not identified all the sources of exposure," said Friday Dr. Althea Hayden, medical officer of health of Vancouver Coastal Health.

"We identified a number of public places where people were exposed or could be and where we were not able to contact them about this exhibit."

If you have been to these areas for these dates and times, you are asked to review your immunization history.

There are other places where the public may have been exposed. VCH staff contacted them directly.

Anyone born before 1970 is considered immune. Anyone born between 1970 and 1994 received only one of the two doses needed to be fully immunized. We invite you to get vaccinated as soon as possible against measles, mumps and rubella. If you were born after 1994, you probably received two doses.

A number of exhibitions took place less than three days ago. Hayden said that receiving a MMR vaccine within three days of exposure can prevent or lessen the severity of the disease.

"For the majority of people who may have been in contact with confirmed cases, it is too late to take preventative measures and we ask them to monitor the symptoms," said a statement from VCH.

"If you develop symptoms … contact your health care provider."
