Two teenagers from Kenyas Number Two, a mining community in the Newmont Ahafo mine watershed, drowned in the company’s water storage facility (WSF).
Police, with support from community members, recovered the bodies from the facility, but preliminary inquiries revealed the deceased was among two other teenagers who entered the private facility.
A press release issued and signed by Mr. Samuel Osei, director of communications and external relations at the Ahafo mine and copied to the Ghanaian News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, said the deceased attempted to swim but s ‘was drowned in the installation.
“The incident has been reported to police and regulators who are currently investigating the incident and Newmont is cooperating with the investigations. Our deepest condolences go out to the bereaved families, ”said François Hardy, Regional Senior Vice President, Africa Operations, in the statement.
They added that “officials from the Ahafo mine visited the families of the deceased to express their sympathy for their loss.”
In accordance with local tradition, the relevant traditional authorities were duly notified and the company would work with them to undertake the necessary traditional rites, the statement said.
The water storage facility is a dam created by the company to store the fresh water needed to operate the mine.
The dam is a protected area with warning signs to discourage unauthorized entry and a company security team patrolling the facility.
