The typhus epidemic in Los Angeles, California, has spread from homeless camps to City Hall. Local authorities say they want to try to solve the problem, but critics point to piles of garbage on the streets.
Deputy Attorney General Liz Greenwood was diagnosed with typhus in November after complaining of headaches and a high fever, she told KNBC on Friday.
"I had the impression that someone was directing the railroad stakes through my eyes and by the back of my neck," Said Greenwood. "Who catches typhus? It is a medieval disease that is caused by garbage. "

Last year, Los Angeles County recorded a record 124 cases of typhus. KNBC quoted the California Department of Public Health. One of them was Greenwood, who thinks he has caught the disease by fleas that have infiltrated his office.
"There are rats at City Hall and City Hall is" she says. "There are huge rats and their tails are as long as their bodies."
Rats often carry fleas and tend to live in garbage piles that have accumulated throughout Los Angeles as the homeless population of the city continues to grow uncontrollably.
Last October, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti promised to clean up piles of garbage to stop the spread of typhus.
"You can not solve the problem (the typhus epidemic) until you find the cause", Estela Lopez District Industrial Improvement District downtown said to KNBC: "And the reason is that you still have those mountains of garbage."
The city has already fumigated several police offices, but City Hall is still on the to-do list.
"This work in busy and crowded public buildings is carefully executed to protect workers and visitors, and the timing of the extermination activities takes these factors into account," City spokeswoman Vicki Curry said in a statement.
California is the most populous state in the United States and its gross domestic product is estimated at $ 1.9 trillion, making it the fifth largest economy in the world, behind Germany. Los Angeles County has more than 10 million residents in 2017.
