Some UCC students donating blood
A blood drive exercise to store the blood bank of health facilities in the Cape Coast metropolis was organized by the Department of Public Affairs of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the health services of universities.
The exercise conducted in collaboration with Global Wings Travel and Tour Limited and supported by the Student Representatives Council (SRC) and the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH) generated more than 100 units of blood.
The move was aimed at helping to get enough blood for cases of high anemia of pregnant women and to help the accident victims because the hospital was the first point of contact when it was there. there had been an accident on the Takoradi-Accra highway.
Mr. Samuel Odua Quarmyne, head of blood collection at the CCTH, noted that an average of 40 to 60 units of blood was needed daily to save lives, but that there was always a lack to win at the hospital.
He stated that the CCTH, the only referral health facility in the central region, provided blood to all districts and polyclinics and that it was therefore necessary to have sufficient blood stocks for effective service delivery. to patients in case of emergency.
He told the GNA that ideally, 1% of the Ghanaian population had to donate blood every year to save the lives of children, pregnant women and accident victims.
However, of the 28,000 Ghanaians targeted out of 160,000 who donated blood, more than half were family substitutes, meaning that people did not voluntarily donate blood unless their loved ones needed it. According to him, blood donors benefit from such benefits as free screening for hepatitis B and C, badually transmitted infections, hypertension and anemia, as well as the knowledge of their blood type for the easy prescription of drugs and the treatment of certain conditions.
He urged institutions, individuals and religious organizations to add blood donation to their activities to help store blood banks, especially during the lean season, as at the end of the year.
Samuel Amoah, a research scientist in the UCC hospital's medical laboratory, reiterated his calls for a voluntary donation in case of emergency.
