Gareth Bale's goal put Real Madrid on the road to victory over Roma in the Champions League by strengthening its position at the top of Group G.
Bale took advantage of a defensive mistake by local defender Federico Fazio to put the holders to the front of the match after the break.
Spanish winger Lucas Vazquez secured all three La Liga points after a soft pbad from Karim Benzema to a Luka Modric center.
Earlier, Viktoria Plzen's 2-1 victory at CSKA Moscow confirmed that both clubs would qualify for the round of 16 with a game to spare.
There was, however, a question mark about who would qualify as the group's winner – Real and Roma both started the game with nine points.
Real, who dominated the face-to-face criteria after winning 3-0 in the first leg, survived an offensive barrage of hosts before securing first place.
