The ranking places the University of Science and Technology Kwame Nkrumah, the University of Cape Coast and the University for Development Studies, respectively 2, 3 and 4.
Garden City University College, privately owned, ranks fifth in front of the University of Education, Winneba (6th) and Ashesi University (7th).
The indicators used for ranking were presence, impact, transparency and excellence.
Although ranked first in Ghana, the country's first university ranks 19th in Africa, ahead of Free State University in South Africa (20), the University of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia (21) and the Kenyatta University in Kenya (22).
The ranking included 66 Ghanaian institutions.
