Ugandan voters return to the polls to elect city mayors

Polling stations in Uganda have been opened to voters to elect city mayors and district presidents.

Local media report a low turnout in local government council elections compared to presidential and parliamentary elections last week.

Political commentator Sarah Biteete told local TV station NTV Uganda that the low turnout was expected as some voters were not happy with the way the general election went.

The election commission said polling stations would close at 4:00 p.m. local time (1:00 p.m. GMT).

Popular musician Jose Chameleon, real name Joseph Mayanja, is fighting for the post of mayor of the capital Kampala. His rivals include Nabilah Naggayi, Dan Kazibwe, Godfrey Nyakana and titular Erias Lukwago.
