UK media regulator Ofcom said on Wednesday that the UK’s four main mobile networks had paid 1.36 billion pounds ($ 1.89 billion) in an auction to secure more airwaves .
The regulator said the main phase of the spectrum auction has been completed and the purchased airwaves will boost both current mobile services and support new 5G networks in the UK.
Ofcom stated that EE Ltd. of BT Group PLC, Hutchison 3G UK Ltd., Telefonica UK Ltd. and Vodafone Ltd. participated in the auction, during which they bid for waves on 34 “lots” to get a total of 200 megahertz of spectrum.
The regulator said Hutchison 3G UK and Telefonica UK won bands in the 2×10 MHz of the paired frequency spectrum for £ 280 million each, and Telefonica also secured 40 MHz in the 3.6-3.8 GHz band for a additional amount of GBP 168 million.
Vodafone UK has won a bid for 40 MHz in the 3.6-3.8 GHz band for GBP 176.4 million. EE won 2×10 MHz in the 700 MHz band for 280 million GBP, 20 MHz in the 700 MHz band for 4 million GBP and 40 MHz in the 3.6-3.8 GHz band for 168 million GBP.
The spectrum auction is now moving to the second stage, after which the commercial terms will be finalized.
