Official figures show retail sales rose in February, up 0.4% from the previous month.

But sales at food stores have seen the biggest drop since December 2016, the Office for National Statistics said.

Separate data showed that government bonds fell to 0.2 billion pounds sterling in February from 1.2 billion pounds a year earlier.

After 11 months of the current financial year, public borrowing amounted to £ 23.1 billion, 44% less than in the same period of the previous year.
