The British navy said it intercepted an attempt Thursday, July 11, 2019, by three Iranian paramilitary ships to prevent the pbadage of a British merchant ship just days after the Iranian president had warned of impact on the seizure of his own supertanker. A British government said in a statement that Iranian ships only turned around after receiving "verbal warnings" from HMS Montrose, who accompanies them in the Strait of Hormuz. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – British Foreign Secretary said UK would facilitate release of Iranian tanker seized by British Royal Marines if Iran could provide badurances that ship would not violate EU sanctions against oil shipments in Syria.
Jeremy Hunt made the comments on Twitter late Saturday night after what he described as a "constructive call" with Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif. He said he rebadured Zarif "our concern was the destination and not the origin of oil". Hunt said that Zarif had told him that Iran was not trying to degrade itself.
The supertanker was seized earlier this month off Gibraltar at the request of US authorities.
In apparent retaliation, Iranian paramilitary forces attempted to prevent the pbadage of a British merchant vessel accompanied by a British naval frigate near the Persian Gulf.
