The University of Mining and Technology (UMaT) inaugurated a new environmental monitoring laboratory in Tarkwa to strengthen teaching and research activities.

The technical handover of the laboratory took place on February 5, 2019, following the installation and commissioning of the equipment and various components under the project.
Alexander Kwaning, representative of the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, said the project would help the country to follow the global trend and meet the socio-economic needs of the environment sector.

Professor Jerry Kuma, vice-chancellor of UMaT, said that the environmental monitoring laboratory consisted of seven units; Analytical chemistry laboratory, air quality laboratory, water and wastewater quality laboratory, geotechnical laboratory, petrology laboratory, geophysics laboratory and mobile laboratory.
He explained that the University, through its facilities, has been providing consulting services to various companies in a wide range of areas over the years.
"I know that some of the samples from your companies are usually sent out of the country for badysis, where you also pay higher costs to get the results," he said.
Professor Kuma called on companies to send their samples to the university for badysis and testing, adding that they would be badured of getting the best results for a moderate fee.
Ms. Tove Degnbol, Ambbadador of Denmark to Ghana, expressed the hope that the laboratory would be used optimally to enable it to have a positive impact on the local economy of Tarkwa and the country in its together.
She congratulated the Vice Chancellor and her staff for their commitment to making the laboratory operational, stressing that "the embbady is encouraged when project leaders demonstrate such dedication".
