UN congratulates Ghana for submitting to the national voluntary examination

Accra, May 30, GNA – The United Nations has
welcomed Ghana's decision to engage in the National Voluntary Review (VNR)
process which aims to examine the level of progress in the implementation of the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A representative in Ghana congratulated the Ministry of Planning on Thursday.
National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) and civil society organizations
(OSC) for their efforts in carrying out the VNR process.

Speaking at a validation workshop on
VNR report, Ms. Dufay said the VNR was an excellent opportunity to review
progress made so far in implementing the SDGs; not only by looking at the
positive aspects, but also the challenges that each country faces in implementing
of the global agenda.

She noted that in July of this year, 51
countries like Ghana would submit their NRV report to the United Nations in New York.

The VNR is part of the formal process
intergovernmental process of monitoring and review of the 2030 Agenda and will be
presented to the United Nations High Level Political Forum (HLPF) in July in New York.

It represents the progress report of a country to
peers and other global stakeholders in the implementation
of the Agenda 2030.

Ms. Dufay, who told Ghana that there was
rich data available to contribute to the NRV review process, also congratulated the
Statistical Service of Ghana for having played a vital role in data collection.

She noted that UNICEF had succeeded in
Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) in Ghana – a
household surveys to provide internationally comparable and statistically rigorous statistics
data on the situation of children and women.

She said that they had also consulted with young people
people; and that the report had allowed UNICEF to have a very interesting
information on young people in Ghana.

She said that the UN had also supported the
consultations that the NDPC and the Ministry of Planning had organized
Across the country; adding that "we are delighted to see that this is a
participatory process ".

She said that young people have a critical role to play
to play in achieving the SDGs; declaring that this year, the UN marked the 30th
anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Ms. Dufay congratulated Ghana for being the
first country to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

"So, in July, when the Minister of Planning
participates in the forum of the UN High Level Group on Sustainable Development Goals, it is hoped that they
discuss the links between the Sustainable Development Goals and youth and children because
these are critical, "she said.
