During a medal ceremony organized by the UN to pay tribute to Ghanaian troops serving with the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) at Kinshasa Battalion Headquarters , The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for MONUSCO Leila Zerrougui praised the United Nations.

Paying homage to Ghana, Zerrougui said, "Ghana has never visited her at the United Nations for the contribution of troops to peace in peace operations since the 1960s, when Ghana's first peacekeepers were deployed in Congo (today DRC). ) for the first United Nations peace operations in Africa. "

The event was honored by the Ambbadador of Ghana to the DRC, His Excellency Joseph Kwaku Antwi; the MONUSCO Police Commissioner, General Awale Sheik Abdounasir; the deputy commander of the force, General Bernard Commins and the commander of the western sector and commander of the contingent of Ghana, Brigadier General Emmanuel Kotia.

The SRSG also congratulated the Ghanaian battalion for having put in place permanent combat deployments in Kitwit (Kwilu Province) and Yumbi (Mai-Ndombe Province) during the election period to ensure that the teams United Nations human rights badessments perform crucial tasks.

These tasks consisted of investigating and verifying possible violations of human rights before, during and after the general elections in the areas concerned.

The SRSG also congratulated the Ghanaian battalion for fulfilling its mandate during the one – year period deployed in the western sector of MONUSCO.

She recalled that the Ghanaian battalion was the first unit to establish a women's mobilization team in their area of ​​operations, in line with the mandate of MONUSCO and UN Security Council Resolution 1325.

Ms. Zerrougui acknowledged Ghana's deployment of female soldiers in combat roles for long-range patrols and to engage in crucial civil-military cooperation activities to support the local population.
