Commander of Ghana Battalion Receives United Nations Peace Medal from Mrs. Leila Zerrougui
The United Nations commended the Government of Ghana for its sacrifice and commitment to global peace and security.
This praise comes after the government's determination to deploy soldiers to help promote peace in the world for more than six decades.
During a medal ceremony organized by the UN to pay tribute to Ghanaian troops serving with the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) at Kinshasa Battalion Headquarters , The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for MONUSCO Leila Zerrougui praised the United Nations.
Paying homage to Ghana, Zerrougui said, "Ghana has never visited her at the United Nations for the contribution of troops to peace in peace operations since the 1960s, when Ghana's first peacekeepers were deployed in Congo (today DRC). ) for the first United Nations peace operations in Africa. "
On behalf of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ms. Zerrougui presented peace medals to officers, men and women of the Ghanaian battalion, during a colorful ceremony attended by the diplomatic corps, the senior staff of the United Nations MONUSCO and representatives of the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of. Congo.
The battalion is under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Bernard Baba Pantoah.
Special mention was made at the ceremony on the contribution and sacrifices made by Ghana's contingent troops for security and peace in the DRC over the years under MONUSCO.
The event was honored by the Ambbadador of Ghana to the DRC, His Excellency Joseph Kwaku Antwi; the MONUSCO Police Commissioner, General Awale Sheik Abdounasir; the deputy commander of the force, General Bernard Commins and the commander of the western sector and commander of the contingent of Ghana, Brigadier General Emmanuel Kotia.
The ambbadadors of Switzerland, United Kingdom, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Senegal, Côte d 'Ivoire and Tanzania were present. The Ghanaian community in Kinshasa and GHANBATT's friends were also present.
The SRSG also congratulated the Ghanaian battalion for having put in place permanent combat deployments in Kitwit (Kwilu Province) and Yumbi (Mai-Ndombe Province) during the election period to ensure that the teams United Nations human rights badessments perform crucial tasks.
These tasks consisted of investigating and verifying possible violations of human rights before, during and after the general elections in the areas concerned.
The SRSG also congratulated the Ghanaian battalion for fulfilling its mandate during the one – year period deployed in the western sector of MONUSCO.
She recalled that the Ghanaian battalion was the first unit to establish a women's mobilization team in their area of operations, in line with the mandate of MONUSCO and UN Security Council Resolution 1325.
Ms. Zerrougui acknowledged Ghana's deployment of female soldiers in combat roles for long-range patrols and to engage in crucial civil-military cooperation activities to support the local population.
The inclusion of women's troops in operational activities has facilitated better interactions and increased the confidence of the local population, especially women and children of rural communities, in the United Nations peacekeeping mission. she explained.
The Ghanaian contingent's efforts to forge friendly relations with local security agencies in their area of responsibility, in line with MONUSCO's collaborative efforts with the various security services in the DRC, were also welcomed.
GHANBATT, thanks to the professionalism of the troops and the deep appreciation of the conflict situation in the DRC, contributed to the supervision of the general elections in the DRC, thus fulfilling an important aspect of MONUSCO's mandate under resolution 2409 (2018) of the United Nations Security Council.
