The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) condemned the violence that shook La Bawalashie in Accra during Thursday's by-election.

UNDP said in a statement released Friday that such "shameless acts of violence" undermine Ghana's democracy.

"Ghana, as a pillar of stability in the subregion, should not become complacent.

"We all call for avoiding violence and the use of incendiary language that could increase tensions," UNDP said in its full statement below.

The NDC reacted to the violence by withdrawing from the by-election, accusing the NPP and President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of deliberately intimidating voters and their polling agents.

Police opened an investigation into the incident.

The headquarters of Ayawaso West Wuogon became vacant following the death of NPP legislator Emmanuel Boakye Agyarko last year.
