(Reuters) – British Society of Education Pearson Plc (PSON.L) said Thursday it has informed customers of a data breach that resulted in unauthorized access to about 13,000 school and university accounts, located primarily in the United States.

The data presented was limited to first names, last names and, in some cases, dates of birth, as well as e-mail addresses, the company said.

"Although we have no evidence that this information was misused, we warned the affected customers of precautionary measures," the company said in a statement sent by email, adding that the vulnerability to the origin of the incident had been corrected.

The Wall Street Journal had previously reported on.wsj.com/333azYP that Pearson had been informed of the data-related incident by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in March.

The FBI did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.
