The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Association of University Teachers of Ghana (UTAG), has ordered its members to withdraw all teaching and related activities on campus from tomorrow Monday August 2, 2020.
“They should put down their tools and stay out of teaching, exams and supervision, correcting exam papers and processing results until further notice,” a statement issued by the NEC and signed jointly by Professor Charles Marfo, National President of UTAG, and Dr Eric KK Abavare, said the National Secretary.
He encouraged members of the various campuses to comply with the directive.
The decision to call a labor strike, according to the NEC, was prompted by the government’s refusal to heed the Association’s calls to improve the deteriorating conditions of service of university professors.
He said the Association was not happy with the way the authorities dragged their feet in negotiations over teacher welfare.
“Specifically, the negotiation of our terms of service, which began about two years ago, has been delayed too long with no end in sight,” Prof Marfo said.
He said UTAG was following through on threats to demonstrate to the government the seriousness attached to members’ demand for the right thing to be done.
According to the NEC, the attitude of government officials during the series of meetings held during the week suggested that university professors were being taken for granted.
“We have no choice but to resort to an indefinite strike,” noted the national president of UTAG.
Meanwhile, the National Executive Boards of the Association of Senior Managers of Universities of Ghana and the Association of Senior Managers of the Federation of Universities of Ghana (FUSSAG) also ordered all members of Ghana’s 16 public universities to resume an indefinite industrial strike on Monday. , August 2, 2021.
This follows the government’s failure to respect and execute the agreements between the two parties (SSA-UoG and government).
According to the group, the government did not respect the ultimatum of “sixty (60) days of May 19, 2071 to resolve all our concerns regarding:
Calculation of category 2 pension interest on the accumulated capital (2010-2016) paid on May 17, 2021, and its refusal to establish a payment plan, as well as the Finalization of the conditions of service, which has not been revised since 2008. ”
He further noted that the June 9, 2021 agreement between SSA-UoG and the Fair Wages and Wages Commission (FSC), overseen and assisted by the Vice Chancellors of Ghana and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC ) to use the period from June 30 to July 19, 2071 to conclude all outstanding negotiations, which turned out to be a hoax when it expired.
“The government’s total and contemptuous disregard for the directives of the National Labor Commission (NLC) on January 28, 2021 after hearing from both sides to resolve all our concerns within three months, which unfortunately also elapsed on March 31, 2021, disgustingly.
For the avoidance of doubt, all members of the senior management associations of Ghana’s 16 public universities (SSA-UOG and FUSSAG) are required to define their tools without any exceptions, until further notice, ”he said.
