Eric Kwakye Darfuor Eric Kwakye Darfuor, Regional Minister for East

The East Regional Minister, Eric Kwakye Darfuor, urged rioting residents of Bas Manya Krobo to no longer have access to the national grid if they could not pay their electricity bills.

The regional minister said residents must be willing to pay electricity bills presented by the electricity distribution services (PDS) or to leave the national grid.

"If you feel you can not pay the electricity bill, the people of Krobo cut it. This is optional. The only thing that is universally free is the free electricity bill. Fuel has never been free, "he said.

The regional minister said Thursday at a stakeholder meeting jointly organized by the East Region Security Council and the Municipal Security Council in Odumase Krobo, following a clash between residents and agents from police.

He has also indicted security personnel deployed in the region to arrest members of a group known as the United Krobo Foundation, which he accuses of fueling the conflict.

Mr. Darfuor said the group was facing the law.

"Some people are called United United Krobo Foundation – a total illegality. They collect royalties, accumulate wealth and use them to disturb peace on Krobo land. I charge the security agencies to collect them. They must be gathered together to face the law. "

Police arrested 35 people after four days of unrest in the municipality as a result of the disconnection exercise organized by the PDS.

At present, 100 police officers from the Accra National Police Unit, the Rapid Deployment Force and the Counter-Terrorism Unit, as well as men of the East Regional Command, carry out patrols in the municipality of Manya Krobo, with the help of riot gear.

A person was confirmed dead after the attack of a police team ensuring the protection of the Municipal Assembly office Wednesday afternoon.
