Authorities in the Greater Accra region have put in place processes to crack down on unruly on the roads in the country’s capital, especially motorcycles and tricycles.
Under the new rules, all owners of unregistered or uninsured motorcycles and tricycles will have until Tuesday, August 31 to regularize their papers or face arrests and prosecutions.
In a statement released, the Regional Coordination Council stressed that the new highway code was part of the “Let’s make Accra work” agenda.
The Greater Accra Regional Safety Council (REGSEC) said it was working in conjunction with the Department of Motor Traffic and Transport (MTTD), the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
Describing the new guidelines, REGSEC said that;
1. All owners of unregistered or uninsured motorcycles and tricycles will have until August 315, 2021 to regularize their documentation. Non-compliant motorcycles will be impounded and riders / owners arrested and prosecuted as of September 15, 2021. When motorcycles and tricycles are not registered, owners or riders must have valid customs / shipping documents. .
2. All drivers of motorcycles and tricycles who do not have a license will be arrested, prosecuted and forced to acquire a valid driver’s license.
3. All drivers of motorcycles and tricycles must obey all traffic rules. Riders who cross the red light and break other traffic rules will be stopped and pursued by a special working group.
4. All riders of motorcycles, passengers and tricycles must wear the appropriate equipment, ie reflective jackets, helmets, knee pads and elbows and boots, if applicable.
