President Akufo-Addo has banned weddings, concerts and parties until further notice.
In his 23rd address to the nation on government action to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, said public gatherings of this nature should not exceed 25 people.
The president first banned all public gatherings on March 15, 2020, during his eighth television broadcast to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the country.
At the time, Ghana had only recorded six cases of the disease.
In his ninth speech, President Akufo-Addo extended the ban on public gatherings until the end of May 2020.
On June 5, 2020, President Akufo-Addo announced as part of the easing of restrictions on Covid-19 that up to 100 worshipers can assemble in churches, mosques and other places of worship.
Although the country records few cases, neglect of Covid-19 security protocols has contributed to an increase in the number of active cases.
The secretary general of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has threatened to go on strike if the government does not impose restrictions on social gatherings as the surge in active Covid-19 cases persists.
Dr Justice Yankson stressed on Saturday that health facilities are already “on their knees”.
He therefore reiterated calls for the implementation of stringent measures to curb the outbreak of the disease.
“The question is very simple, and we can only advise, and we can only plead. In the worst case, we give up our tools, but that may not be the solution to this pandemic because we do not control the public purse, we do not control the executive branch. We therefore continue to advise the government, ”he said.
