Update: New reports have once again confirmed Gunn's involvement in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie. THR announced that it would direct the next film starring the DC team after confirming that it would be written at the end of last year.
However, THR announces that Gunn's new film, Suicide Squad, will not be a direct sequel, but a relaunch of the property, with new characters and a majority of new actors.
Original story follows:
A representative of Warner Bros. confirmed to IGN that James Gunn would write what would likely be Suicide Squad 2. "It is confirmed that James Gunn is writing the next installment of the Suicide Squad franchise," the representative told IGN. Original story follows …
Suicide Squad 2 may have found his writer and director in James Gunn.
The Wrap reports that Gunn is in talks to write and direct the sequel to Suicide Squad, while Polygon has confirmed that Gunn is going to write it, but WB did not know he'd be heading it too. IGN solicited comments from WB.
According to the report, the veteran Guardians of the Galaxy "is in talks to write" and has "the eye to lead" DC's anti-hero suite. In addition, Gunn would take a completely new approach to Suicide Squad rather than follow closely what had been established in the original of 2016.
Gavin O 'Connor (the accountant) would have been the previous favorite to write and direct Suicide Squad 2 as recently as last month.
In July, Disney dismissed Gunn as Guardian of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 director following the jokes on Twitter that he had done on rape and pedophilia in 2008 and 2009 resurfaced. Despite requests from Gunn and others, Disney and Marvel have decided not to bring him back. Following Gunn's ouster from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, IGN has taken a look at other Washington properties for which he might agree.
