The following is an Island Health message.
Island Health has received laboratory reports of the last suspected case of measles and these results have returned negative. As a result, the potential exhibition sites listed today are no longer considered to be exposure sites. They include Victoria Butterfly Gardens, Walmart Supercentre on Saanich Road and Selkirk Montessori School.
Dee Hoyano, a health specialist at Island Health, also canceled the instruction that unvaccinated children at Selkirk Montessori School would not be in school for 21 days.
To limit the spread of a potentially highly contagious disease, our medical officers of health have had to act quickly because post-exposure preventive measures are more effective in a matter of days. We appreciate the cooperation and badistance of everyone involved and recognize the inconvenience and stress this may have caused to some.
SOUTH ISLAND, BC – Island Health is investigating a new suspect case of measles on South Island.
Island Health warns people that they may have been exposed to measles at the following locations:
April 10 from 3 pm to 5 pm at Victoria Butterfly Gardens: 1461 Benvenuto Avenue, Brentwood Bay
April 11th from 2pm to 5:30 pm at Walmart Supercenter, Uptown Mall: 3560 Saanich Road, Saanich
April 12th from 2pm to 5:30 pm at Walmart Supercenter, Uptown Mall: 3560 Saanich Road, Saanich
People who were at these locations at these specific times are encouraged to monitor their symptoms for 21 days after the date of exposure.
Symptoms include fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, diarrhea and red eyes, followed a few days later by a rash that starts on the face and spreads to the chest.
Those born after 1970 who have never had measles, or who have not received two doses of vaccine are at a higher risk of measles, Island Health encourages them to be vaccinated completely.
Island Health is contacting families from the Selkirk Montessori School who may have been exposed to measles during the week of April 8 to 12.
Dr. Dee Hoyano, Medical Health Officer of Island Health, ordered unvaccinated children from the Selkirk Montessori School not to attend and these could only be present after May 3 .
If you develop symptoms, contact your health care provider before visiting him so that he can take precautions to prevent the transmission of measles to other people.
