A hospital official in Ghana said that three other miners died after inhaling smoke after the explosion that they unleashed, bringing to 16 the death toll.

The medical director of Bolgatanga's Upper East Regional Hospital, Patrick Atobrah, confirmed the deaths on Thursday.

The miners worked for the Chinese company Shaanxi Mining Ghana Ltd. in Gbane.

The Minerals Commission ordered the company to suspend all mining activities on the site.

The mine has been plagued by accidents over the years. In October, an underground cleaner died after being hit by a machine. In April 2017, seven illegal miners were trapped by smoke and killed.
