A consultant studies a mammogram
The referral guidelines for cancer in Scotland have been updated to recognize the symptoms of the disease earlier.
In a collaborative effort between the Scottish Primary Care Group in Scotland, Macmillan Cancer Support and Healthcare Improvement Scotland, the guidelines are designed to help identify the patients most likely to develop cancer and requiring urgent expert badessment.
It is expected that the update will also help identify patients whose cancer is unlikely.

Health Secretary Jeane Freeman said: "The latest Scottish guidelines for cancer referrals will give Scottish clinicians access to the latest evidence to guide patients with symptoms." cancer suspects to the most appropriate route at the right time.
"The updated guidelines also reflect changes in primary care, recognizing not only the role of nurse practitioners, nursing badistants, pharmacists, dentists and optometrists in detecting symptoms, but also the importance of placing individuals central to the decision-making process.
"We are working hard to improve the prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of cancer patients in Scotland with our £ 100 million cancer strategy.
"To date, 87% of the actions in this strategy have been completed or are on track."
A Patient Support Brochure – Your urgent reference explained – was developed in partnership with Cancer Research UK to coincide with the launch of the revised guidelines.
