The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Upper Denkyira West, Mr. Samuel Nsowah-Djan, urged Ghanaians not to resort to instant justice when dealing with suspected criminals.

He added that such attacks could result in serious injury or death to innocent people engaged in their legitimate work.

Mr. Nsowa-Djan was thinking about the second anniversary of the murder of Major Maxwell Adam Mahama by a mob when he was on an anti-illegal mission two years ago in Denkyira Obuasi.

Change of name and al

Denkyira Obuasi, now called New Obuasi, is one of the cities in the upper part of West Denkyira.

Last Wednesday, the government unveiled a statue at the Airport Hills (Kpeletso) roundabout in La, a suburb of Accra, in memory of Major Mahama.

Senior military officers, including the Chief of the Defense Staff, General Obed Akwa; Minister of Defense Dominic Nitiwul and Minister of the Interior Ambrose Dery.

Effects on the city

Addressing the effects of the unfortunate situation on Denkyira Obuasi or New Obuasi, Nsowa-Djan said the attacks had reduced development in the region.

He said the region was a predominant farming community and said that after the killing of the soldier, many farmers have deserted their farms.

In addition, said the legislator, many young people and professionals, including doctors, nurses and teachers, have deserted the city for fear of retaliation attacks by the army.

He said the desertion of the region had had a negative impact on the livelihoods business activities of the few people who remained in the area.

In addition to the effects on economic activities, Mr. Nsowa-Djan said that the badbadination of Major Mahama had altered the image of the region and its inhabitants.

For example, he said, wherever he went and mentioned his name and MP position for Upper Denkyira West, people began to look at him with suspicion.

"The killing of Major Mahama has damaged the reputation of the region, people think we are the killers," he said, before asking other Ghanaians to follow the example of the population of New Obuasi.
