SAN ANTONIO – Ursa Space Systems Expands Partnership with Finland's Iceye Radar Satellite Operator
Ursa will sell the Iceye data products and the two companies will jointly develop new badytical services with data extracted from Iceye's Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites. Ursa and Iceye announced on June 5th at the GEOINT 2019 symposium here.
Ursa and Iceye concluded their first agreement in 2018. This pact gave Ursa access to Iceye's data archive and the ability to fly Iceye's first Iceye-X1 satellite. "The new agreement is much more comprehensive," said Adam Maher, co-founder and CEO of Ursa. SpaceNews.
Iceye launched its second SAR satellite, Iceye-X2, in December. The company plans to launch up to five other satellites in 2019, according to the Ursa-Iceye press release.
"Iceye's image quality is fantastic," said Derek Edinger, co-founder of Ursa and director of strategy. "We are delighted that their constellation is rising."
Ursa, based in Ithaca, New York, has agreements with many SAR satellite operators. Ursa combines SAR data with other sources of information to provide customers with "economic intelligence," Edinger said. Originally, Ursa focused on data products for the oil and gas industry, but has since expanded its product line.
As Ursa's scanning capacity increases and Iceye expands its constellation, both companies are eager to explore new applications in SAR data, Edinger said.
"The global market for SAR satellite data and products is growing rapidly and there is no sign of slowing down," Rafal Modrzewski, CEO of Iceye, said in a statement. "Together with Ursa, we can provide even more value with reliable and actionable information from almost any point on the planet."
