A 100 kg US bomb from the Second World War was defused in the night near the central city center of Alexanderplatz, police said Saturday.

Police evacuated about 3,000 people from the area on Friday and cordoned off after the bomb was discovered near a large shopping center.

The evacuation area covered part of the shopping center and several trains were also suspended during the operation.

The US bomb was found at a depth of about three meters and had an intact detonator, police said.

"The detonator has been successfully destroyed, we are lifting the restrictions in stages, and you will soon be able to return to your apartments," Berlin police said on Twitter.

Nearly 75 years after the end of the Second World War, Germany is still littered with bombs and other unexploded ordnance. The experts said that there were still 3,000 devices in the basement of the German capital.

Alexanderplatz is one of the busiest districts of Berlin, with dozens of shops and residences located near the square housing the city's iconic TV tower.

Berlin was heavily bombed in the spring of 1945 by Allied forces. One-third of its homes were destroyed and tens of thousands were killed.

Last April, a 500 kg British bomb was defused. About 10,000 people were evacuated for the operation.
