The Ambassador of the United States of America (USA) to Ghana congratulated the Parliamentary Nominations Committee, made up of 26 members, for their professionalism in the verification of ministerial appointments which has just been completed.
The Nominations Committee, chaired by First Vice President Joseph Osei Owusu, oversaw the review of some 46 people appointed by President Akufo-Addo for his second term.
Her Excellency Stephanie Sullivan underlined their impartiality and balance in accountability during the process, saying that this “sent a strong signal that the work of Parliament will not proceed as usual and that Parliament is now assuming its functions as control very seriously ”.
In a Parliamentary Service press release on Wednesday, March 17, the service revealed that discussions had taken place between President Alban Bagbin, Majority Leader, Minority Leader and US Ambassador Stephanie Sullivan over the need strong trade relations between the two countries.
The majority leader, the Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu discussed the benefits of the many knowledge exchange programs between the two countries and stressed the need to improve trade relations and further strengthen the private sector as it is the engine of growth of any economy.
Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu also raised concerns over the threat of money laundering and called on the United States to help state institutions block illicit remittances.
The issue of child labor which was hotly addressed during the Committee’s audit was also echoed by the MP for Tamale South in their discussions.
According to Mr. Iddrisu, the overall definition of child labor appears to conflict with what he perceives to be “culture” in Ghanaian society.
He said that “the indicators used to measure child labor and child trafficking that show Ghana in a bad light and urged the United States to put the phenomenon in its proper context, stating that through our culture, Ghanaian children help their parents and relatives with their economic situation. efforts and it has nothing to do with child labor in any way, ”the statement added.
Once again, Her Excellency Stephanie Sullivan also took the opportunity to congratulate President Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin on his rise to the high post of President of the 8e Parliament.
President Alban Bagbin expressed his gratitude in response to his praise and also for the good relations between Ghana and the United States.
According to him, his election to the presidency underlines that “Ghanaians are no longer interested in partisan politics and that they expect the two main political parties to put the best interests of the country at the forefront and to collaborate more for the ultimate good. from the country”.
He therefore urged all state officials and Ghanaians to stand up for the virtue of accountability as it is a key ingredient for Ghana’s progress.
