The United States approved Monday the sale of $ 3.8 billion of 25 F-16 fighter jets in Morocco, the state department said.

In addition to the new F-16 70/72 block, equipped with advanced electronic systems and weapons, Washington has also approved the modernization of 23 F-16s already in the Moroccan aviation fleet for $ 983 million. dollars.

The State Department said the sale would not affect the balance of power in the region.

It can still be blocked by the US Congress, which has 30 days to raise objections.

More than 4,500 of the F-16s built by Lockheed Martin have been delivered since 1978.

It is gradually being replaced by F-35 stealth fighters, but more than 3,000 F-16s are still used in 25 countries, thanks to constant improvements.

The Moroccan army ordered 24 F-16s in 2008. She lost a plane in action in 2015 during air operations conducted by Saudi Arabia in Yemen.
