US CEOs and United Airlines have just met with President Trump. What happened then "shocked" them
Others
[ad_1]
They teamed up and wrote an open letter to President Trump in the New York Times and other newspapers, begging him essentially to take action against a competitor.
Then they tried a second effort, as part of an organization called Partnership for Open & Fair Skies, and ran an ad in Fox News that seemed to have a targeted audience: President Trump himself.
Finally, on Thursday, airline CEOs had the chance to present their case in person to Trump at a meeting at the White House. But all would have had a result very different from what they hoped for.
'Dear President Trump & # 39;
Brief Overview: In short, the airlines wanted Trump to take executive action against Air Italy, which is expanding and offering non-stop flights between the United States and Europe. Their argument is that, since Air Italy is 49% owned by Qatar Airways, this expansion means that Qatar Airways is violating a major airline competition agreement with the United States.
The letter and the television advertising of the airlines must be read and appreciated. They flattered Trump and raised the issue of keeping promises and protecting American workers – not helping the airlines themselves.
So, I guess they must have felt optimistic when they had the chance to go to the White House on Thursday and present their arguments in person.
Only two problems: the unexpected guest at the White House meeting and the other surprising person who did not show up.
"From Qatar"
CNBC reports that Trump did not meet on Thursday in the Oval Office with United Airlines General Manager Oscar Munoz and American Airlines General Manager Doug Parker.
Instead, they were "shocked" to note that Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker was also present, CNBC said, citing "a person close to the meeting".
The other surprise: the CEO of Delta, Ed Bastian, was not there.
Trump reportedly referred to Delta's absence on several occasions, and Al Baker would also have pointed out that he had come "from Qatar thoroughly" for the meeting.
"The real story," said a White House official at CNBC, "is that Delta refused the invitation. It did not help their cause."
CNBC quoted a spokesman for Delta as saying that Bastian "refused" to attend the meeting, but that he:
"Unfortunately, he had not been able to plan his trip before and he is grateful for the opportunity … to discuss this important issue with the President and the members of the administration." Delta remains determined 100% to level the playing field at the international aviation level. "
File a complaint
The end result (well, at least for the moment), is that President Trump apparently would not have agreed to do anything and instead told airlines that they should file grievances and submit to the court process. usual.
This is generally considered beneficial for Qatar Airways because the status quo means that Air Italy can continue to expand, regardless of how it evolves.
As an airline site One thousand at a time This could be the end of the airlines' efforts – although they expressed optimism afterwards, since they could not even get a meeting to discuss the issue under President Obama:
Despite Trump's "America first" program, it is quite telling not to have taken any action, but rather to ask American airlines to follow the usual procedures, which will probably not lead anywhere.
Unrelated but quite interesting, this meeting apparently took place shortly before President Trump tweeted that Kanye West had asked him to intervene in the case of rapper A $ AP Rocky, who was currently holds in Sweden as a result of a so-called street fight. .
In this case, Trump tweeted that he was talking with the Swedish Prime Minister and was ready to "personally guarantee" A $ AP Rocky in order to achieve results.
Anything that suggests that American Airlines and United Airlines do that.
Maybe instead of running ads in newspapers and in TV commercials, they should ask Kanye to plead their case.
