The latest trade threat against China comes just days before the meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to defuse the ongoing trade dispute between the world's two largest economic powers.
Instead, Lighthizer's statement further compounded the dispute by stating, "China's aggressive state-led industrial policies are causing serious damage to US workers and manufacturers."
And while the talks continue, "For the moment, China has not yet presented significant reform proposals," he added.
The country's auto pricing policy is "particularly blatant", taxing US cars at more than double the rate applied to other countries.
"On the order of the President, I will examine all available tools to equalize the tariffs applied to automobiles," he said.
Trump has already imposed very high tariffs on about half of Chinese products imported into the US market each year and has threatened to target the remaining $ 267 billion, which would affect iPhones and Apple laptops made in China.
He said Monday that he did not think that an agreement would be reached this week that would prevent a scheduled increase in the duty rate on goods by $ 200 billion. But a White House advisor said on Tuesday that Trump thought there was a "good chance" to reach an agreement.
