The US government has congratulated the Densu Oyster Pickers' Association (DOPA) and the Development Action Association (DAA) for the successful completion of the second annual oyster harvest closure season.
Located in the Tsokomey community of the South Ga Municipal Assembly, these two organizations are local, community-led non-governmental organizations engaged in the protection of Ghana's oyster stock.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) supported the efforts of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development to facilitate the community co-management plan of the Densu Estuary for oyster resources.
As a result, DOPA, DAA and other stakeholders have successfully implemented the five-month annual closure season to increase oyster yields.
This closing season of the Densu Estuary is one of three pilot projects conducted in Ghana to demonstrate the viability of collaborative coastal fisheries management.
USAID also helped the ministry develop a national co-management policy, which is currently being reviewed by the ministry.
Minister of Fisheries Elizabeth Naa Afoley Quaye; Dela Sasu, Municipal Planning Manager of the Ga South Municipal Assembly, and James G. Lykos, Head of the USAID / Ghana Economic Growth Team, delivered a speech highlighting the successful partnership between the government, DOPA, DAA and the Tsokomey community.
In his remarks, Mr. Lykos said, "The successful closure period proves that when the responsibility for decision-making is shared between the government, citizens and other stakeholders, resource management is more efficient and sustainable. "
