Resolution presented to Congress following last week’s violent assault on Capitol Hill by Trump supporters.
Members of the US House of Representatives passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of outgoing US President Donald Trump under the 25th Amendment, following chaos on Capitol Hill last week when supporters of the president stormed into building.
Members were overwhelmingly divided along party lines in the vote with only one Republican supporting the resolution.
Under the 25th Amendment, Vice President Mike Pence and a majority of Trump’s cabinet would have to declare Trump incapable of performing his duties.
Pence has already rejected the use of the 25th Amendment, making Trump’s impeachment more likely, analysts say. A number of Republicans have now broken ranks to say they would support the move, including Liz Cheney, the third-largest Republican in the House.
A vote to impeach Trump is expected Wednesday.
Five people have died from the chaos of the past week, which followed a rally by the outgoing President at the White House. Trump, who showed no remorse over the events and claimed he was the victim of a ‘witch hunt’, is charged with ‘incitement to insurgency’ following the attack on the heart from the US government.
Addressing the House on Tuesday, President Nancy Pelosi accused Trump of “fanning the flames” of violence.
“The president’s actions demonstrate his absolute inability to perform the most basic functions and duties of his office,” she said. “The president must be removed from office immediately.
“I urge my fellow Republicans to open their eyes and finally hold this president to account. The security of our country and the security of our democracy itself are at stake. ”
