A measles outbreak nationwide has led health officials to quarantine dozens of people in two Los Angeles universities, officials said Thursday.
The quarantine is at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and California State University in Los Angeles (Cal State LA) and comes as the United States fights the highest number of measles cases since the country declared the virus eliminated in 2000.
The United States has confirmed the presence of 695 cases of measles, announced Wednesday the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Most cases occurred in the states of New York and Washington.
California has confirmed 38 cases, public health officials said.
People quarantined on both California campuses were exposed to measles and could not prove that they had been immunized against the disease, the Los County Public Health Department said. Angeles in a statement.
"Both universities are helping to implement quarantine orders and determine the best way to help students who need to be quarantined and living on campus," said the Ministry of Public Health.
In Cal State, quarantine is linked to exposure to measles in a library on April 11. The quarantine initially affected about 200 employees, including some student-employees, said the university in a statement.
This number was then reduced to 156 people, the Ministry of Public Health announced on Thursday in an email. Quarantine will end in a week.
In UCLA, 119 students and eight staff members who were exposed to measles on campus earlier this month and were unable to provide proof of immunity were quarantined Wednesday, the university said. in a statement.
Since then, the authorities have released more than 40 people in their forties after establishing their immunity. The quarantine of UCLA will end Tuesday, according to the Ministry of Public Health.
The virus can cause life-threatening complications, but no case of measles deaths was reported during the last outbreak in the United States.
US public health officials have blamed the epidemic on a national scale, which coincides with a worldwide increase in the prevalence of the disease, in part due to the spread of false information about vaccine safety.
Although the disease was eliminated from the country in 2000, which means that the virus was no longer present all year, outbreaks still occur through travelers from countries where Measles is common, says the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
