US not allowed to ‘lecture’ Uganda on elections

The United States should “fix its own elections” rather than “lecturing” Uganda on its elections, Ugandan government spokesman Ofwono Opondo, as quoted by state-linked New Vision, said.

His comments came after the United States said it was considering “targeted options” following an election in Uganda that was marred by “irregularities” and “abuse” by security forces.

In his response, Opondo said the government would await an official communication from the U.S. government.

“In the meantime, the US government had better fix their own elections where, according to President Donald Trump, even the dead have voted and Joe Biden is in office by fraud and so they should be the last to give lectures,” said Mr. Ofwono. saying.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni – who has been in power since 1986 – was declared the winner in the January elections. Its main challenger, Bobi Wine, said the poll was rigged, but dropped plans to challenge the result in court.

The official results showed that Mr. Museveni obtained 59% of the vote against 35% of Bobi Wine.
