The United States on Monday urged the Guinean coup leader to set a timeline for new elections after being sworn in as interim president.
Colonel Mamady Doumbouya said he was committed to a transition to civilian rule, but was sworn in on Friday to lead the West African nation for an indefinite transition period.
“The United States urges the Guinean military junta to appoint a civilian head of the transitional government and to commit to a timetable for free and fair elections (…)”, said a spokesperson for the Department of State.
The spokesperson said civilians, including opposition leaders, women and marginalized groups, should play a “central role” in the transition.
On September 5, the military ousted Alpha Conde, who became the turbulent nation’s first democratically elected president in 2010, but passed a controversial new constitution last year that allowed him to run for a third term, sparking deadly demonstrations.
The region’s bloc, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), is demanding elections be held within six months and Condé’s release.
